The traditional company has been one of the largest and most modern private cheese dairies in Austria for more than 130 years. The family business is run by Gerrit Woerle in the 5th generation, employs around 350 people and is supplied by around 500 farmers from the region. With its hay-milk Emmentaler and in the segment of processed cheese slices, it is the market leader in this country. Under the “Happy Cow” brand, the company mainly supplies processed cheese products to around 70 countries.
A comprehensive sustainability strategy was launched in 2019 under the title “WOERLE continues to make an impact”. Together with customers and partners, the focus is on sustainable development along the value chain. Above all, the company’s own pioneering projects “Regional CO2 reduced” and “Biodiversity in the hands of farmers” set new standards for a nature- and climate-friendly future while promoting small-scale farming structures. In addition to improving the energy balance of the company, supported by its own suppliers, and motivating the preservation of biodiversity, special attention is also paid to research on the reduction of ammonia and methane emissions from cattle slurry through dairy residues in order to create new solutions for a regional circular economy. For the company, active knowledge transfer is the key to sustainable development. This is evident in the company’s own apprenticeship courses and in the cooperation with the HBLA Ursprung.
