Austria Leads the Way in Advancing the Global Bioeconomy

Through COLI, Austria is paving the way for a sustainable, forest-based bioeconomy.

In 2024, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment, Climate, Regions, and Water Management (BMLUK) launched the initiative “A Country & Organisation-Led Initiative (COLI) on Sustainable Forest-based Bioeconomy Approaches.” The focus is on the sustainable use of renewable resources, with an emphasis on the wood-based value chain. Together with international partners such as Australia, Finland, and Japan, innovative approaches to the bioeconomy are being advanced.

Bioeconomy in Focus of Global Cooperation

The goal is to harmonize economic growth, ecological sustainability, and social justice. The term bioeconomy has different focal points in various regions of the world. While there is no universally accepted definition, it generally refers to the economy based on renewable resources. The efficient use of these resources is crucial, as even renewable resources are finite and must be utilized with a focus on sustainability.

Global Webinar Series on “Forest-Based Bioeconomy”

An essential component of COLI is a global webinar series, which will be conducted by FAO in 2025. This project is supported by the BMLUK and the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture. The webinars will present different bioeconomy strategies from around the world, with experts in forest-based bioeconomy sharing their insights and participants exchanging their experiences.
